Today education is a fundamental right. Each and every person needs to be able to read and write, and learn more. Education which is given to grown up (adult) people is called adult education. Literacy IS the first stage of lealning. So it is also necessary to make adult people 11te1 ate It not only increases our literacy rate but also transforms the life of people making it easier, and more useful and comfortable.

Adult education is not merely the process of expanding literacy. It  also includes training and counseling on important matters such as health, household management, family planning and common jobs. It also makes further learning possible. Because education makes us skilled, it helps to reduce the problem of unemployment to a large extent. In our country the majority of the people are uneducated. This is a maincause of our backwardness. The adults who are the only working age group cannot be productive without education and training.

Adult education has many advantages. Many adult literacy classes have been running in many parts of the country. Besides learning to read and write, they get some useful skills. In some adult classes, English is also taught. When the farmers know how to read and write, they can use the knowledge in many ways. They can read newspapers and books. It helps them to work and produce better in their jobs. For example, farmers know a lot about improved seeds, better tools, insecticides, etc. In similar ways people engaged in other occupations also get benefited frbm literacy and education.

Literate peoplewill send their children to school and encourage them more actively and effectively in studies because they know about the importance of education. Adult education is more important to females. There are many differences between educated women and uneducated women..An educated woman performs both as a mother and a teacher at home. She can guide her children in their studies at home. She knows about the importance of hygiene, nutrition, and sanitation. Whenever a child gets sick, she knows what to do and what not to do. She takes her children to health post or hospital. She also advises her neighbours who are ignorant. She knows better about other aspects of family management, too.

As education is an urgentneed of the day, the government must encourage adults to acquire basic education in different ways. Free adult classes based on school should be conducted especially in remote areas. Mere literacy is not all helpful. A new curriculum should be formulated for basic technical education. The basic classes fortechnical education and literacy should be
free of cost. Also free textbooks should be made available so that poor people will be encouraged to take adult classes.
