Adolescence is the transitional period between childhood and adulthood. It is so the stage of maturation and covers completely the teenage along with few years before and after. Adolescence is characterized by many changes, the physical ones beings quite dramatic. Because it is a sensative and important part of one's life, proper management of changes as well as needs and trouble is imperative.
Adolescence attain average body height and weight in this period. But the growth occurs earlier among females than males by 2 or 3 years. maturation of system such as the reproductive one occurs. Pituitary gland becomes active resulting in growth of hormonal level. They attain sexual maturity. Males start producing sperm and females experience the onset of menstruation that is associated with the production of ovum. Body hair and public hair emerge. Physical changes such as enlargement of breast and broadening of hips are specific to females while emergence of mustache and change in larynx causing voice to become coarse are unique in males.
Adolescence is also a period of emotional and social changes. There capacity of concentration and reasoning develops remarkably. They are able to understand complex problems there curiosity is very high they are interested in peer group activities and want to develop leadership. Attraction to opposite sex is natural. Confidence goes up and they try to develop from a dependent to an independent person.
According to an American psychologist G.Stanley Hall, adolescence is a period of emotional stress. Many adolescents are likely to grow tension and stress due to both changes and restrictions imposed by the family and society. Their feelings, attitudes and activities may contradict with what the family and society assume to be standard. They are often easy and reckless imitators what their interests and needs are not recognized by the family and society, they may grow aggressive and rebellious. Many also suffer from peer group pressure and happen to grow bad habits such as smoking and drug taking due to lack of proper knowledge about their sexuality, many are involved in sex abuse. They may fall victim to unsafe sex.
